Built by Contractors, For Contractors
Western Didn’t Start Because We Wanted to “Get Into Lumber”
It started because we were tired of being the contractor on the other side of the counter—getting treated like a transaction instead of a partner.
Where We Came From
Rob and Bruce grew up on job sites with our dad. Houses, pole barns, dirt work, concrete, roofing, remodels — if it was hard, he wanted to do it. That’s where we learned two things:
1) Hard things are normal
2) Excellence matters
Our dad had an attraction to the impossible. The projects other contractors walked away from? Those were the ones he wanted. That shaped us. We learned early that giving up wasn’t an option and that cutting corners wasn’t acceptable.
But we also experienced what every contractor experiences: terrible customer service, products that didn’t meet our quality standards, and suppliers that saw us as order numbers instead of partners.
The Day Everything Changed
Truss quality from suppliers kept slowing our projects down. Warped lumber. Incorrect cuts. Late deliveries. One day our dad finally said:
“This can’t be that hard. We can do it better.”
So we put up a three-sided shed, bought a truss table and a saw, and started building our own trusses — just so we could get the quality we needed to keep our projects moving. One day we were building trusses, the next day we were setting them on a job.
Word got out.
Other builders started asking for trusses. Then they saw the lumber we were using. Then they started asking for lumber.
From Construction to Supply
Around that time, our parents moved to Wyoming. Our dad started a rental equipment and lumber yard combination. The rental side took off, so in 2013 he sold the lumber portion to us three brothers — Rob, Lee, and Bruce.
Lee ran the operation from 2013 to 2016. When he moved back to Virginia, Rob and Bruce bought out his portion — and Western as it stands today was born.
It wasn’t glamorous. Rob and Bruce were still running construction jobs while trying to learn an entirely new industry from scratch—hiring employees, purchasing equipment, fulfilling orders, building systems. We were shutting down construction work while trying to keep food on the table and build something that would actually serve contractors.
We went through rough stretches—really rough stretches—where we questioned if we’d make it.
What We Learned in the Field
We’ve been in the field. We know what 5:30 AM brain feels like. We know the mix of grit, faith, stress, and satisfaction that comes from driving by a project months later and saying, “We built that.”
We know what it’s like to:
- •Hope materials show up right
- •Try to look good in front of the client
- •Deal with suppliers who don't understand urgency
- •Coordinate multiple vendors who don't communicate
- •Get stuck with the wrong materials and no recourse
- •Work long days, come home tired, and wake up to do it again
That’s in our DNA too.
The Supplier We Never Had
As we built Western, we filtered every decision through one question:
“What would we have wanted as contractors?”
We wanted ONE supplier who could handle everything
Not a lumber yard that calls a truss guy, who calls a steel guy, who calls a column guy — leaving us to manage four different companies with four different quality standards and timelines.
Solution: We became vertically integrated. We design it. We engineer it. We manufacture it. We deliver it. One team. One standard. One delivery.
We wanted someone who actually cared about our success
Not order-takers who disappeared after the sale.
Solution: Dedicated account managers matched to your personality and business style. They're your advocate inside Western — solving problems before they reach the jobsite.
We wanted quality we could trust
Materials that show up right, fit right, and make us look good.
Solution: In-house manufacturing with quality control at every step. When you get Western materials, you get our reputation attached to it.
We wanted a supplier who understood the field
People who knew what "I need it Tuesday" actually means.
Solution: We're contractors. We get it. Our inside sales team isn't reading from a script — they've lived your reality.
Our Mission: Change the Industry
